We’ve all been told over and over again that the media has a liberal bias. But, is it really true? And, if it is true; how did it become that way? Well, the fact is that there is no evidence to suggest that the media is biased in the liberal direction. For it to be so, it would almost have to mean that those who enter the field of journalism as a profession are far more likely than others to be liberal. It would also mean that these journalists reported the news framed in their own liberal views, which is contrary to everything one is taught in journalism school. Otherwise, a bias in either direction would be pretty hard to maintain over the long run.
Let’s look at some studies. First of all, the Fairness and Accurate Reporting agency, “Fair.org”, did a study way back in 1998 that found the following things about journalists’ personal beliefs:
This study contradicts the findings most used to substantiate a liberal media bias. In 1986, a book called “The Media Elite”, surveyed journalists and found that most were Democratic voters whose attitudes were well to the left of the general public on a variety of topics, including such hot-button social issues as abortion, affirmative action, and gay rights. It is this work from 1986 that has put the notion into our heads that the media is liberal.
It would be ridiculous to say that the political views of journalists never affect the way they report on a story. Journalists obviously would have the ability to adjust a detail here or there to reflect their own views if they chose to do so – even though it would be highly unethical from a journalistic point of view. But, if they did this and were caught by their news producers, would they be reprimanded? Or are their news producers liberal too?
It’s not likely that the argument that the media is liberal will continue. It is a feeling so rooted in conservative American politics that it is very unlikely to disappear any time soon. But, it’s important for each of us to decide for ourselves if reporting is fair and to support the news organizations that we believe report things fairly and accurately. This will likely take some work on our parts; comparing the coverage of different news outlets on the same story and seeing who gets the facts straight. The notion of a liberal media is not new, and is not going away. However, there’s little real evidence to support the notion that there is a conspiracy going on to sway the public to the left of center. After all, in today’s American society there are 47 million people registered as Republicans and 32 million registered Independent voters.
